The MCS Plymouth Local Group is very active, holding many different activities throughout the year. Full details of all these activities can be found on the relevant page in the 'Events' section, but listed below are some quick dates for your reference.

2011

Thursday 27th January
January monthly meeting - Matthew McHugh (Marine Biological Association) will be giving a talk on, "Long term change in fish populations and seabed wildlife out of Plymouth - 100 years of research". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 24th February
February monthly meeting - John Hepburn will be giving a talk on, "More than dots on the horizon: the maritime sector and why you should be interested in it", followed by Dominic Flint (MCS Plymouth Local Group) giving a talk on, "Finding Sanctuary: The MCS View". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 24th March
March monthly meeting - Isobel Bloor will be giving a talk on, "Cuttlefish – their life and new research in the CRESH project". Starting at 7.30pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Saturday 9th April
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 11.00am at the top of the steps at Batten Bay.

Thursday 28th April
April monthly meeting - Sally Sharrock (MCS Plymouth Local Group) will be giving a talk on, "Diving and Conservation in British Columbia". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Sunday 17th July
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 9.30am at the top of the steps at Batten Bay.

Saturday 17th September
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 10.30am at the top of the steps at Batten Bay.

Saturday 3rd December
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 12.30pm at the top of the steps at Batten Bay.

2010

Thursday 28th January
January monthly meeting - Tam Sneddon (Environment Management Officer, Fisheries) will be explaining the complex rules and regulations covering fishing in and around Plymouth Sound. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 25th February
February monthly meeting - Nigel Mortimer (Estuaries Officer, South Devon AONB) will be telling us about the intriguing delights of estuarine mud - the bacteria love it! Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Saturday 20th March
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 10.00am at the top of the steps at Batten Bay.

Thursday 25th March
March monthly meeting - Liz Wood, MCS Coral Reef Conservation Officer, will be talking to us about, "Conservation Action for Corals, Giant Clams, Curios and Fish". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 29th April
April monthly meeting followed by Local Group AGM - Trudy Russell talking to us about "iSpot", a website that provides a place for members of the public to learn about wildlife and share their interest with a friendly community. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 20th May
May monthly meeting - Oreston mud low tide ramble led by Keith Hiscock. Meeting at 5.30pm at Oreston and returning to the King's Arms afterwards if you wish.

Friday 18th June
June monthly meeting - Wembury low tide snorkel and rockpool ramble. Low tide 5.15pm. Meet any time after 5pm at Wembury to either snorkel or rockpool, look at seaweeds, etc.

Thursday 30th September
September monthly meeting - Keith Hiscock talking on, "Life beneath polar seas: surprising diversity and the threat of climate change". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Sunday 24th October
October monthly meeting - pontoon ramble at Mayflower Marina. Starting at 1pm and gathering afterwards in Jolly Jack's.

Thursday 25th November
November monthly meeting - Angie Gall on "Scillies sparkling seas - highlights of marine surveys in an outstanding area". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

2009

Saturday 17th January
Beach cleanups at Batten Bay and Jennycliffe followed by a BBQ at Jennycliffe. Meeting at 10.30am at Batten Bay and heading over to Jennycliffe around 12.00pm for the second cleanup and beach BBQ.

Thursday 29th January
January monthly meeting - Richard White (Devon Wildlife Trust) will be giving a talk on 'Seas of Plenty', followed by the Local Group AGM. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 26th February
February monthly meeting - Colin Munro speaking on 'The canoe fishermen of Mbour - a snapshot of artisanal fisheries, depleted stocks and environmental degradation problems in Senegal'. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Saturday 14th March
Marine ID course at Bovisand.

Thursday 26th March
March monthly meeting - Paul Naylor talking about the behaviour of underwater species. Starting at 7pm at the Diving & Sailing Centre, Coxside.

Saturday 4th - Sunday 5th April
Seasearch Observer Course at Bovisand - entry level course with Saturday spent in the classroom and dives on Sunday.

Friday 10th April
Rockpool ramble and Easter Egg Hunt at Batten Bay, Mountbatten. Easter Egg Hunt will start at 11.30am with the ramble at 12noon.

Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th April
Seasearch Surveyor Course - for those who are Observers and want to move up to Surveyor level.

Saturday 25th April
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 10.00am at Batten Bay at the top of the steps.

Thursday 30th April
April monthly meeting - Jason Hall-Spencer will be talking about the work he has been involved with on CO2 vents and acidification of the oceans. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 28th May
May monthly meeting - Andrew Pilar and Jim Portus talking about fishing discards and sustainability of local fishing fleets. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Saturday 6th June
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay for World Ocean's Day. More details TBC.

Thursday 25th June
June monthly meeting - Dr Matthew Frost, 'History of the MBA', Dr Keith Hiscock, 'Conservation Science' and Linda Noble, Senior Librarian will give an explanatory tour of the Library facilities. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 30th July
July monthly meeting - John Rundle on the breeding and culture of cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, plus the film, "The cuttlefish of Babbacombe Bay". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Saturday 19th September
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay for the MCS Beachwatch weekend and PADI Project AWARE International Cleanup Day. Meeting at 10.00am at Batten Bay at the top of the steps.

Thursday 24th September
September monthly meeting - Peter Richardson talking about Turtles. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 29th October
October monthly meeting - Keith Hiscock on, "Reefs Out Of Plymouth". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 26th November
November monthly meeting - Recording schemes including Sally Sharrock - ‘The Seasearch year’. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

2008

Saturday 12th January
Beach cleanups at Jennycliffe and Batten Bay with a Seashore Safari at Batten Bay. Meeting at 10.30am in Jennycliffe car park and heading over to Batten Bay around 12.00pm for the second cleanup and Seashore Safari. There will also be a BBQ afterwards on the beach.

Thursday 31st January
January monthly meeting - Dominic Flint talking on"Tierra del Fuego to South Georgia". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 28th February
February monthly meeting - Jason Hall-Spencer talking about Arctic coral reefs and Antony Jinman talking about Polar Venture's forthcoming expedition to Baffin Island. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 20th March
MCS Plymouth Local Group photo competition launched - see the Photo Competition page for more details and to download the entry form and rules.

Thursday 27th March
March monthly meeting - Dr John Bishop talking about non-native marine species. Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 11.00am at Batten Bay at the top of the steps.

Thursday 24th April
April monthly meeting - Fiona Crouch will be talking to us about "The Shore Thing" project and Ali Hood will be talkign to us about "All the latest on UK sharks". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 29th May
May monthly meeting - Dr Richard Thompson will give a talk on "Plastic Debris in the Marine Environment". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Sunday 22nd June
Beach cleanup at Batten Bay. Meeting at 10.00am at Batten Bay at the top of the steps.

Thursday 26th June
June monthly meeting - Roger Covey, together with other speakers, will join us for an evening about "Fish and Fishing". Unfortunately this meeting has been cancelled.

Friday 18th July
Closing date for the MCS Plymouth Local Group photo competition - see the Photo Competition page for more details.

Thursday 31st July
July monthly meeting - Gavin Black will be talking to us about "Devon's Marine Megafauna". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

August
NO MEETING.

Saturday 20th September
Beach clean and underwater cleanup at Batten Bay for the MCS Beachwatch weekend and PADI Project AWARE International Underwater Cleanup Day. Meeting at 10.30am at Batten Bay at the top of the steps. Divers need to bring their own kit, in test. In Deep dive club will be joining us for this event.

Thursday 25th September
September monthly meeting - Dr Keith Hiscock will be talking about "The ends of the Earth - South America to Antarctica". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 30th October
October monthly meeting - Dr Nova Mieszkowska will be talking to us about "Climate Change". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.

Thursday 27th November
September monthly meeting - Melissa Moore will be talking to us about "Marine Renewables". Starting at 7pm at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) on Plymouth Hoe.
